Madison, Wis., Dec. 14, 2007—Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) reminds customers they must keep the area around the gas meter clear of snow and ice. Recently, a fire at a local business started after ice damaged an outside gas pipe. Calls to MGE about outside gas leaks have increased with near-record snow falls and ice on gas meters and associated equipment. Homeowners should also clear large amounts of snow and ice from above the meter area. Heavy snow and ice falling on the meter from a roof can cause damage to equipment and create a gas leak. To keep the furnace operating properly, the furnace air intake and exhaust pipes also need to be clear of snow and ice. A blocked pipe may cause the safety switch to turn off the furnace. If the strong and persistent odor of natural gas is present, get out of the building or away from the source and call MGE immediately at 252-1111. MGE generates and distributes electricity to nearly 135,000 customers in Dane County, Wis., and purchases and distributes natural gas to more than 138,000 customers in seven south-central and western Wisconsin counties. MGE's roots in the Madison area date back more than 150 years. |
