Changing your heating system?

Home Heating Fuel Calculator

Consider natural gas. It costs less than fuel oil, LP or electric heat. Add this to the higher efficiency of most new heating systems, and your savings could be significant.

  • MGE's website provides an online calculator to help you estimate the cost savings of using natural gas and a heating system with the same efficiency as your current system.
  • Try it out at mge.com/comparefuel.

Incentives may be available to reduce your up-front costs. Federal tax credits and Focus on Energy Cash-Back Rewards may be available to reduce the cost of your new heating system or water heater. Learn more online at mge.com/savemoney.

Other conversion costs. Switching to natural gas from another fuel usually requires replacing your furnace/boiler and maybe your water heater if it uses the same fuel. Costs will vary but are typically $3,500 to $4,000.

  • Often we can install a natural gas line from the street to your house at no charge, depending on the distance. MGE will supply the gas service to your building wall closest to the street or 65 feet, whichever is less. Beyond that, there is a charge.

For more information, call our Home Energy Line at (608) 252-7117. If you don't have a natural gas line to your home, call 252-7061 or (866) 252-7080 for a long-distance call.
