Beautify, protect your natural gas meter

Is your gas meter, or the piping to the meter, starting to look rusty? It may be a good time to apply a fresh coat of paint. Doing so will provide some defense from weather and ensure that the meter's anticorrosion protection is not impaired by rust.

Paint with care

Before painting your gas meter, remember:

• Don't get paint on the dial cover, the identification plate that shows the meter number or the vent screen on the regulator to your gas meter. If you'd rather not paint the meter housing, MGE sends out crews to paint our meters over time (about 6,000 a year). However, the piping from your house to the meter does not belong to MGE and is the responsibility of the homeowner to paint.

• Don't use metallic paint, such as aluminum or gold.

• Use a rust-preventive paint. This will give added protection from the weather.

• If you also are an MGE electric customer, we ask that you NOT paint your electric meter.

Respect your natural gas piping

Don't let the rugged appearance of your gas meter and piping tempt you or others to chain bicycles or animals or hang objects on them. This could damage the meter, impair its anticorrosion protection or even create a safety hazard.
