Residential Rates
MGE takes responsibility to provide safe and reliable electricity and natural gas service at reasonable rates. The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSCW) regulates MGE's business and sets rates.
We recognize the economic downturn has been difficult for many of our customers, and we work to control our costs.
The recently approved electric rate increase reflects:
- Installation of scrubbers on the Columbia Energy Center to significantly reduce air emissions.
- Assorted final construction costs associated with the Elm Road Generating Station in Oak Creek.
- Other costs such as transmission construction through ATC and long-term costs of a purchase power agreement.
The recently approved natural gas rate increase reflects an increase in costs to maintain the gas system and deliver gas to homes and businesses.
The new prices are effective Jan. 1, 2013.
Electricity
Electric rates have increased 3.8%. A typical residential customer using 550 kWh per month will see a monthly bill increase of about $3.97 for electric service.

Natural Gas
Natural gas rates have increased 1.0%. A typical residential customer will see an increase of about 58 cents per month. Natural gas distribution service rates cover gas system maintenance and the costs to deliver safe and reliable gas to customers’ homes. The distribution rate is the regulated component of your natural gas rate and is independent of gas supply prices, which fluctuate based on market conditions.
