Green Power Tomorrow
In response to our customers asking for more renewable energy options, MGE is pleased to provide Green Power Tomorrow.
Green power benefits
By adding more renewable energy to our electricity supply, we can reduce:
- Climate change.
- Environmental impacts of developing fossil fuels.
- Our dependence on scarce energy sources.
- Our dependence on foreign energy resources.
Green power costs
- More. Although the fuel is free, green power costs more than electricity produced with conventional fuels because the initial construction and installation costs are significantly higher for every kilowatt of capacity. While solar power is even more expensive than wind-generated power, we think it is important to support the development of this clean, green resource in our area.
- And less. The cost to buy green power has dropped dramatically since we first offered it to our customers in 1999. Today, because we’ve added new, larger wind resources in areas of stronger winds, the price is only $0.01 more per kilowatt-hour.
An option for those who want and can afford to buy it
We are required to provide some green energy in MGE's electricity mix for all customers. We could just charge all of our customers the extra cost to develop more green power. But we want to hold the line on costs for our customers who can least afford it. Green Power Tomorrow allows us to do more. We think it's better to offer optional renewable energy so people can choose to support it or not.
You can buy green power for your home or business today
You can offset up to 100% of the carbon dioxide emissions from your electricity use through Green Power Tomorrow. For the average MGE residential customer using 600 kWh per month, the extra cost would be about $6.00 per month.
- You can select the level of renewable green energy you would like.
- You will be billed the additional amount each month.
