Recycling
As your community energy company, we are committed to reducing and reusing as many products as possible. We've long made a practice of recycling all waste streams that we can.
Reclaim mercury in your household items
Thermostats and some types of lighting contain small amounts of mercury.
Recycle your old thermostat.
Bring your old thermostat to MGE's general office at 133 S. Blair St. anytime during business hours. We'll make sure it is recycled appropriately and at no charge.
Recycle your fluorescent, compact fluorescent, high pressure sodium and metal halide lightbulbs.
The Dane County Landfill no longer accepts these bulbs. You can recycle them at several locations in Dane County for little or no charge for small quantities. The City of Madison requires stores that sell fluorescent bulbs to collect and recycle them. See where to recycle bulbs.
MGE recycles
During the construction of our West Campus Cogeneration Facility, we made a special effort to recycle our construction materials. MGE received the Governor's Award for Excellence in Environmental Performance for our recycling effort.
Scrap wire, iron and other metals have been sold for reuse for years. Our paper recycling program began in earnest in 1985. Some of the materials we recycle include:
- Copper
- Steel
- Iron
- Lead
- Aluminum, including aluminum cans
- Miscellaneous metal
- Office paper
- Cardboard
- Audiovisual items
- Plastic bottles
