MGE Clean Air Actions

MGE is one of the founding members of the Dane County Clean Air Coalition – a partnership of businesses, schools and government agencies working to improve air quality in Dane County. Since 2003, the coalition has worked on voluntary programs to ensure Dane County meets federal air standards.

MGE and its employees participate by following company and county guidelines for improved air quality.

Dane County efforts

Because transportation, energy consumption and other daily activities have a significant effect on air quality, the Dane County Clean Air Coalition asks public institutions, private businesses and residents to take:

  • Overall pollution-reduction measures.
  • Stepped-up measures on Clean Air Action Days when higher levels of air emissions are expected in Dane County. A Clean Air Action Day can be called for:
    • Ground-level ozone – most likely to occur in the summer when higher pollution levels react with the sunlight, or
    • Fine particulate pollution – most likely to occur in the winter when the air is calm and warmer air aloft acts as a lid and holds particulates near the ground.

A Clean Air Action Day is called by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Dane County Clean Air Coalition when air quality data and weather conditions indicate air pollution is reaching higher levels.
