Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
MGE is installing a network of six charging stations around MGE’s service area over the next several months. During the pilot, MGE customers who own electric vehicles will be able to use MGE’s stations to recharge their vehicles at no cost. Customer participation in this pilot technology demonstration program will help us study and learn how we may be able to support electric vehicles in the future.

How the pilot program works
Any MGE electric customer who drives a plug-in electric vehicle can apply to participate. MGE will issue a secure card to qualified vehicle owners which will allow vehicle charging at any of the stations. If you are an MGE electric customer and would like to charge your vehicle at these stations at no cost, contact MGE.
The information MGE gathers from this pilot program and what we learn will help determine our next steps with respect to this infrastructure.
About this technology
Distributed by Carbon Day Automotive in Chicago, the charging stations MGE is using are manufactured by Coulomb Technologies, Inc., a U.S.-based company located in California.
Background information
While there are currently very few plug-in electric vehicles requiring grid charging in the Madison area, use of electric vehicles will eventually impact electric utilities and the infrastructure to provide electricity to customers. These first charging stations will help us to understand such things as:
- How this infrastructure could work.
- How consumers will want to use public charging stations.
- Driving and charging patterns.
- Interconnection with the electricity grid.
