Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center is a 250,000-square-foot multi-level facility that sits on the shore of Lake Monona in downtown Madison. Hundreds of thousands of visitors attend meetings, banquets, conferences and conventions at Monona Terrace annually.

Monona Terrace is the first convention center in the country to earn silver LEED-Existing Building certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The convention center staff is dedicated to sustainable efforts and environmentally responsible business practices.

"As part of our commitment to the environment, our city and our customers, we participate in MGE's Green Power Tomorrow program—buying clean energy from MGE fits well with our philosophy," said Jeff Griffith, building maintenance supervisor. "It takes a lot of energy to run a convention center, and we are committed to doing it in an environmentally responsible manner."

Monona Terrace takes action each day to operate a greener facility. From working with a sophisticated energy-management system that controls heating, cooling and ventilation to using green cleaning products and encouraging recycling.

"It is an ongoing process to ensure we continue to operate in a way that makes good choices for the environment," Griffith said. "We consistently investigate new ways we can reduce our environmental footprint to benefit our community and guests—from exploring energy-efficient equipment and lighting improvements to other renewable energy sources and training opportunities."
